Carnegie Foundation
Andrew Carnegie, founder of the Carnegie Foundation.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement in Teaching was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1905. It is located in Stanford, California, and has had eight presidents since the time it was invented. Each of these men have made several contributions to the field of education, including the development of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, creation of the Carnegie Unit, founding the Educational Testing Service, and establishing of the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Carnegie Unit in specific is still impacting much of learning today by setting a standard amount of class time a student must attend to receive a credit for that subject. This helped keep schooling consistent in the country, disabling certain schools from giving students credit for a class without enough knowledge of the subject and time spent learning it. The Carnegie Foundation was made to improve education from the start, the organization itself stating that
“Improving teaching and learning has always been Carnegie’s motivation and heritage.”
To this day, the foundation does whatever it can to make learning more efficient in classrooms. The collaborators of the organization work together and share their knowledge, then change how things work in the classroom. They say that they
“Hone in on “high leverage problems” – those that affect large numbers of students.”
By eliminating the common problems that students face in the learning environment, the Carnegie Foundation efficiently improves the quality of education in America.
